From Field to Studio: the Art of Paul Kane. This
DVD is a companion to the award-winning television
documentary Visions from the Wilderness: the
Art of Paul Kane. Together they tell a gripping story
about a fascinating artist adventurer set in the
Canadian West of the 1840s. The DVD’s compelling
interactive narrative explores Paul Kane’s
desire to document First Nations and Métis
peoples on his two and a half year journey across
the Prairies, over the Rocky Mountains, down the
Columbia River and back to Toronto. While Kane’s
little seen field sketches and notes achieve this
goal, it is Kane's romanticized oil paintings and
published travelogue that became the historic record.
Interactive Documentary
The DVD video is intended for DVD players (although it
can also be played on a computer). Users interact with
the documentary using a DVD remote control or a computer
mouse as they watch the program on their television sets
or computer screens. Viewers are able to pause the documentary
and access video commentary from museum curators and
Aboriginal artists, or take a more detailed look at examples
of Kane's artwork that are relevant to that part of the
program. When the activity or video is over, users return
to the documentary’s main narrative. They can also
access information directly using the innovative Site
Map with Links option that takes them directly to the
interactive points in the documentary program.

in new and interesting ways.
