Green
Heroes is a Web/TV crossover that features the stories
of corporate knights, public figures and everyday heroes
who tell their transformative stories. In two-minute
episodes, they re-live the moment that took them from
apathy to action.
Each week, Green Heroes profiles someone who, in a single moment,
shifted his or her world-view and suddenly understood that
something must be done to save the planet. Their inspirational
stories of green epiphanies
will provide motivation for all of us to do what we
can to preserve the natural world for future generations.
The inspiration for our first green testimony comes from
a story that appeared on our series Lucky Breaks about
world-renowned scientist and television personality
David Suzuki. He told us how a routine fishing
trip into the BC interior that he took as a graduate
student led him to devote his life to preserving
the environment. While traveling along logging
roads to his usual fishing grounds, Mr. Suzuki
was struck by the contrast between the barren
clear-cut lands he crossed and the dense greenery
of the
untouched old growth forests he entered. This
moment of juxtaposition provided the green-inspiration
for David Suzuki to reshape his scientific research
and begin a career as a vocal proponent for environmentalism.
Users will be encouraged to submit their own story ideas and suggestions
of green-inspired people that they know. People love to share success
stories like the moment Victoria Secret’s CEO decided to use
recycled paper for the company’s popular catalogues or how the
Sharing Backyards website was inspired by one of the founders hitching
a ride from Winnipeg to Vancouver in a truck delivering pickles.
Green Heroes will dispel the popular myths: that
you can’t be a responsible business and also care of the environment,
that it costs too much money to shop locally, or that it takes too
much time and energy to start a movement like Greenpeace or Treehugger,
both Canadian success stories.
The channel is not one more voice in the plethora of Internet portals
focused on creating concern and fear over the future of our planet.
It is a site of inspiration and hope that leads its viewers and participants
beyond anxiety to action.
