C.W. Jefferys: Picturing Canada
Documentary on artist C. W. Jefferys launches at the Arts and Letters Club Wednesday, June 15 and premieres on Bravo! Sunday, July 17 at 8 p.m. EST
C.W. Jefferys (1869-1951) is most noted for bringing our country’s history to life. During the golden age of newspaper illustration, he used his pen and ink like a camera to capture the drama of events for papers like the Toronto Globe and New York Herald. He then turned this skill to the realm of historical re-creation and became the first artist to take Canadian history and make it leap off the page. Today his historical illustrations remain the most frequently consulted source of Canada’s early imagery. As well as being a newspaper illustrator and historian, Jefferys was also an accomplished landscape artist and political cartoonist.
