Our Children-Our Voices: Words as Medicine

Client: De Dwa da dehs nye>s Aboriginal Health Centre

CineFocus was honoured to co-created a 45 minute live-stream video event with the De Dwa Da Dehs Nye>s Health Centre in Hamilton for the first National Day of Truth and Reconciliation. The ceremonies were pre-taped at the Six Nations of the Grand River reserve and streamed on Facebook Live to give voice and help healing through the sharing of stories, poems and messages about the effect of the Residential School system on Indigenous Peoples.

Featuring members of Six Nations of the Grand River and Missisaugas of the Credit First Nations, among others, the video captures the reflections of elders and youth, among them hip hop producer David Stickland, musician and entertainer Mark Laforme, and poets Duke Redbird and Kahsenniyo Williams. This video is a 15 minute excerpt from the full video.

“Orange Shirt Day” began 13 years ago and became an official day of recognition in 2021 to be held each year on September 30.
